Predictions Concerning The Messiah
Time ~ Ancestry ~ Birth ~ Betrayal ~ Crucifixion ~ Others God chose to validate His message and His Messiah by telling the future in advance -- sometimes thousands of years in advance -- in great detail. No one but God could do that! ISAIAH 46:9-10 NKJ
9 Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure,'God foretold the future to authenticate His message -- so we would know the truth and trust Him. JOHN 20:31 NKJ
31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.Jesus of Nazareth claimed to be the Jewish Messiah foretold by the Holy Scriptures. (Christ is the Greek translation of Messiah.) In fact, He claimed that the whole of Scripture was about Him -- which it is! LUKE 24:27,44 NKJ
27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
44 Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me."Out of hundreds of Old Testament prophecies pertaining to Messiah, we will only look at a few. Time of Messiah's Arrival Although Daniel wrote his prophecy hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus Christ, (probably before 500 B.C.), he foretold exactly when Messiah would come. DANIEL 9:24-26 NIV
24 "Seventy `sevens' are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy.
25 "Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven `sevens,' and sixty-two `sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.
26 After the sixty-two `sevens,' the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.Nehemiah 2 records the issuing of this decree to rebuild Jerusalem with the exact month and year of its issue. NEHEMIAH 2:1,7,8 NKJ
1 And it came to pass in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, that I took the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had never been sad in his presence before.
7 Furthermore I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, let letters be given to me for the governors of the region beyond the River, that they must permit me to pass through till I come to Judah,
8 "and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he must give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel which pertains to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house that I will occupy." And the king granted them to me according to the good hand of my God upon me.Using the Hebrew year of 360 days (and thus adding 483 years from when the decree was issued to rebuild Jerusalem) results in 33 A.D. as the date fulfilling the prophecy in Daniel chapter 9. How amazing that God foretold hundreds of years in advance exactly when the Messiah would come! The prophecy also told that "Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself," and that the city and the sanctuary would be destroyed after Messiah came -- which of course they were in 70 A.D. by the Roman army under Titus. Christianity: The Faith That Makes Sense.)DANIEL 9:26 NKJ
26 "And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined.(For a more detailed explanation of the timing, look at the book by Dennis McCallum,

Ancestry of Messiah Below are some of the many requirements the Messiah had to fulfill -- all of which Jesus of Nazareth did fulfill.
Mighty God, Everlasting Father ISAIAH 9:6 NKJ
6 For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.Born of a virgin ISAIAH 7:14 NKJ
14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.Born of a woman GENESIS 3:15 NKJ
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel."Descendant of Abraham GENESIS 12:3 NKJ
3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."Descendant of Isaac GENESIS 21:12 NKJ
12 But God said to Abraham, "Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called.Descendant of Judah GENESIS 49:10 NKJ
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to Him shall be the obedience of the people.Descendant of David JEREMIAH 23:5 NKJ
5 "Behold, the days are coming," says the Lord, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.Descendant of Solomon 2 SAMUEL 7:12,13,16 NKJ
12 "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 "He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
16 "And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever." ' "Not a descendant of Jeconiah JEREMIAH 22:30 NKJ
30 Thus says the Lord: `Write this man down as childless, a man who shall not prosper in his days; for none of his descendants shall prosper, sitting on the throne of David, and ruling anymore in Judah.' "The genealogies of Jesus Christ can be read at Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38. Luke traces the genealogy through Jesus' mother Mary, while Matthew traces back through Jesus' adopted father Joseph. Through Joseph the requirement to be a descendant of Solomon is fulfilled. Through being born of a virgin (Mary), Jesus also fulfilled the requirement to not be a blood descendant of Jeconiah, yet be a blood descendant of David. Only God's wisdom could have conceived such a plan -- fulfilling all the prophecies in one person. Go to Top
Birth of Messiah About 700 years prior to the event, God told us through His prophet Micah where the Messiah was to be born. MICAH 5:2 NKJ
2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting."MATTHEW 2:1 NKJ
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,Go to Top
Betrayal of Messiah About 400 years before Messiah was born, Zechariah wrote down the price Jesus would be betrayed for -- 30 pieces of silver -- along with some amazing details (including what happened to the money). ZECHARIAH 11:12-13 NKJ
12 Then I said to them, "If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain." So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.
13 And the Lord said to me, "Throw it to the potter"--that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord for the potter.MATTHEW 27:3-10 NKJ
3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." And they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!"
5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.
6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood."
7 And they took counsel and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
8 Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah* the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced,
10 "and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me."*(Albert Barnes shows that a change of a single letter in the original would transform Zechariah into Jeremiah, and it is supposed that some early copyist made the mistake. Another explanation is that Jeremiah, in the Jewish arrangement of the prophets, stood first, and that his name was given to the whole book of prophecy. -- People's New Testament Commentary)

Crucifixion of Messiah Some 400 years before crucifixion was invented, Jesus' death by crucifixion was described in detail in Scripture. PSALM 22:1,7-8,14-18 NKJ
1 My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning?
7 All those who see Me laugh Me to scorn; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 "He trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!"
14 I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death.
16 For dogs have surrounded Me; The assembly of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet;
17 I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me.
18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.
Silent Before His Accusers ISAIAH 53:7 NKJ
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not his mouth.MATTHEW 27:12-14 NKJ
12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.
13 Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?"
14 And He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
Hit and Spit On ISAIAH 50:6 NKJ
6 I gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.MATTHEW 26:67 NKJ
67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands,
Feet and Hands Pierced PSALM 22:16 NKJ
16 For dogs have surrounded Me; The assembly of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet;LUKE 23:33 NKJ
33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.(Crucifixion is the only form of execution that would pierce the hands and the feet.)
Crucified with Robbers ISAIAH 53:12 NKJ
12 . . . He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.MATTHEW 27:38 NKJ
38 Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left.
Prayed For His Persecutors ISAIAH 53:12 NKJ
12 . . .He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.LUKE 23:34 NKJ
34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." And they divided His garments and cast lots.
People Gambled for His Garments PSALM 22:18 NKJ
18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.JOHN 19:23-24 NKJ
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.
24 They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: "They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots." Therefore the soldiers did these things.
Bruised and Wounded ISAIAH 53:5 NKJ
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.MATTHEW 27:26 NKJ
26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
His Bones Not Broken PSALM 34:20 NKJ
20 He guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken.JOHN 19:33 NKJ
33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
His Side Pierced ZECHARIAH 12:10 NKJ
10 ". . .then they will look on Me whom they have pierced; they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.JOHN 19:34-37 NKJ
34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.
36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not one of His bones shall be broken."
37 And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."
People Mocked Him PSALM 22:7-8 NKJ
7 All those who see Me laugh Me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 "He trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him; let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!"MATTHEW 27:39,43 NKJ
39 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads
43 "He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him . . .
Buried in a Rich Man's Tomb ISAIAH 53:9 NKJ
9 And they made His grave with the wicked--but with the rich at His death, because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.MATTHEW 27:57-60 NKJ
57 Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.
58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. To die as a common criminal, yet be buried in a rich man's tomb was highly unlikely.
His Body Did Not Decay PSALM 16:10 NKJ
10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.ACTS 2:31 NKJ
31 "he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.Go to Top
The odds of fulfilling all the messianic prophecies already fulfilled by Jesus of Nazareth are ridiculously high -- plainly impossible -- without God's involvement. The remaining prophecies, concerning Messiah reigning as King, will soon happen when Jesus returns to earth.
